Tips, Tricks and FAQs
What do I do now that I’ve Purchased my guitar?
A couple of things I’d recommend anyone to do once they get their guitar is to:
- Let the guitar sit for a day
- Change the strings
- Adjust the truss rod
Let the guitar sit for a day because it will have traveled and will have gone through several temperature changes.
First of all, guitars are made of wood, and wood shrinks and expands with temperature changes, so you want to give your new guitar a day or two to settle in.
This can solve some of the problems with string rattle, and dead spots.
On more than one occasion I’ve picked up an acoustic guitar that has been sitting in a cold room, played it and found string buzz, and then let it sit for an hour in a warmer room.
Result? After an hour, the buzz was gone.
Change the strings, because the strings will probably have been put on when the guitar was manufactured, so they could be months, or even a year old. (Click here for more on strings.)
Guitar strings start to degrade over time, even if you don’t play them.
If the strings on your new guitar are old, they won’t sound as bright or have as good a tone. New strings can fix this.
You don’t have to do this right away, but it’s good to keep in mind.
Adjust the truss rod, but only if you’re getting fret buzz or dead spots.
This is a sort of advanced topic, and honestly, most beginner guitarists won’t notice the effect of this right away, because they won’t be playing much farther than the fifth fret, but it can turn a guitar that’s frustrating to play into one that’s a pleasure.
